Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Pearnel Charles Jr, says the Government is taking more steps to prevent illegal and unregulated fishing practices within Jamaica’s coastal areas.

Minister Charles Jr spoke at the hand over ceremony of over 50 sanctuary boundary marker buoys to the Caribbean Coastal Area Management Foundation.

The buoys are valued at more than 1.1 million Jamaican dollars.

The Minister says the markers will impact illegal and unreported fishing practices.

Minister Charles Jr also added that interference within the sanctuary can attract significant fines of up to a maximum of $3 million dollars in a Parish Court or three years imprisonment.
